Explicit Pattern Rule for Math

When the question asks for a really high term, for example the 20th term, we are faced with 2 choices.

Choice # 1 is to continue the pattern until you get to the 20th term.  Now that is time consuming and full of places where you can lose track.  I suggest choice #2, the explicit pattern rule!

Choice #2  The explicit pattern rule

To find the 20th term = 1st number in pattern + [(term number minus 1) x difference]

Let's see an example.

1, 4, 7, 10, 13,

Find the 20th term!!!!!

First thing is to find the difference (This is the magical word).
The difference between the terms is 3.

Now we use the explicit pattern rule to find the 20th term.  (They are asking what the 20th number in the pattern might actually be)

20th = 1 + [(20-1) x 3]
       = 1 + (19 x 3)
       = 1 + 57
       = 58

New pattern

2, 7, 12, 17

What is the 40th term!!!!  Ahhhhhhhh!!!!

First thing is to find the difference.  The difference is 5.
Now we use the explicit pattern rule to find the 40th term.

40th = 2 + (39 x 5)
       = 2 + 195
       = 197

The key is to do the multiplying first because of order of operations.

Simple.

A bull and horse were working side by side, each carrying a heavy load. The bull was complaining about the excessive weight he carried; the horse replied:

"What are you complaining about? If I take one of your bags, my load will be twice as heavy as yours; but if you take one of my bags, your load will be equal to mine."

How many bags was each one carrying?
(Every bag has the same weight.)

Families are encouraged to use reusable containers instead of plastic bags or plastic wrap for their food. Any recyclable material such as juice boxes and cans are fine as well. Any waste that would belong in a garbage can on these days will need to be brought back home for disposal.

Presentation and Test!!

This week is an important one because students will be presenting their biography presentations AND writing a geometry test. They should be preparing for both at home.

For the biography presentation, students are in the final stages of placing all of their information and pictures onto slides in an organized and creative layout. Presentations will be on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

For geometry, students should be studying polygons and angles using classroom notes and websites for practice. Being able to classify, measure and create angles and shapes is the most important skill to know for this test.

Good luck everyone!

**Next week, we will be starting literature circles in LA and multiplication and division in Math.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Biography Rubric

I am attaching the marking rubric that I will use to assess the biography presentations next week. The students are currently putting their jot notes into sentence form and placing them into their Google Presentation along with photos of their individual.

BIOGRAPHY RUBRIC

Reminder: Grad photos on Thursday!

Just a little reminder that grad photos are tomorrow at 9:30am. I have asked students to try to wear a neutral colour for photos...white, black, grey, navy are preferable. If you would like to order individual photos, information will be sent home soon.

Sunday, February 2, 2014

Biography Assignment

Now that this assignment is underway, it is important for all students to keep up with each stage of completion. Rough draft jot notes are supposed to be due tomorrow, but I will not be checking them until Tuesday (we do not have Language on Mondays). This includes a written draft of the answers to most of the questions posed in each category on their handout. I have encouraged students to try to use more than one source for their research (e.g. multiple websites, books, articles).

Graduation memories sheet

Parents of Grade 6s: Just for clarification, the graduation memories sheet that was sent home is only to be filled out if you would like to purchase a vinyl folder for $10.00. Every student will receive a class composite free of charge. Forms for individual photo purchase will be passed out AFTER the photos are taken.

Sorry, wrong sheet was sent home for grad portraits!!

I apologize for the confusion, but please disregard the "Confirmation sheet for Graduation/Farewell Portraits" which was NOT supposed to go home to parents. All grade 6s brought home another sheet entitled "Graduation Memories", which is an order form to be brought in on or before picture day.
The grad photo day is Thursday, February 6th.

Tuesday News

I hope that everyone is surviving this cold weather! Today the students participated in the Gym Jam Tennis during Block 2. Everyone did a fantastic job! We will be going into Round 2 on Thursday.

Letters were sent home with grade 6 students today concerning Confirmation portriats, which will be taken on Feb. 6th.

In Geometry, we are continuing to measure and classify different types of polygons. Students should practise using a protractor to measure different angles at home. We will be finishing off the unit with symmetry soon.

In Language Arts, we are going to be starting a culminating task foe our biography unit tomorrow. Partners will have to choose a famous individual (living or dead) to create a biography on. We will be using computers for the rest of the week to do research. Students will present their person using a Google Presentation (similar to PowerPoint), which will be due sometime next week.

Friday, January 24, 2014

This past week...

This week was definitely a busy one! Congratulations to Ryan and Josh, who were the first to receive responses in the mail from Pawel and Abby of Calgary. I'm sure we will receive many more letters in the upcoming weeks. I've informed the students that it is up to them if they would like to continue writing to their friends throughout Canada.

In language arts, grade 6s did some EQAO practice this week (reading comprehension). We are also starting a biography unit. Next week, students will be assigned a large project where they will have to choose an influential person to research and present a biography of that person. More details to come...

In math, students are learning symmetry (gr 5), angles (5/6), types of triangles (5/6) and continuing co-ordinate practice, especially in the negative quadrants (gr 6). The attached picture is what they should be familiar with. Measurement quizzes are marked and will be handed back on Monday. Please sign and return.

So this task involves showing how we are all different, through our special talents, interests, families, etc. The collage is due on MONDAY and each student will present his/her collage to the class. Students may borrow magazines from the classroom to take home if need be.

Wednesday homework = study for measurement quiz!!

The Data Management tests have all been handed back. I'm still waiting for a few of them to be signed. I will remind those students today. There will be an opportunity for an in-class make-up assignment that is focused on mean, median, mode and range on Wednesday at lunch. I will present this opportunity to the students today. For those that received a mark lower than a B-, this will be mandatory.

This week we will be having a Measurement Quiz on Thursday. The focus will be on classification of units (mm, cm, m , km), conversion and perimeter. Please encourage your child to study this week. The most important thing for them to know is the following conversion chart!

Thursday, January 9, 2014

Beginning of January

This week, we will be continuing Chapter 5: Measurement in math, and the focus will be estimating, measuring, and recording perimeter. Data Management unit tests will be handed back on Wednesday, Jan 8th. Please sign them and ask your child to correct errors and return the next day for bonus marks. The Chapter Tasks booklet is due this week. It is a culminating math activity that was assigned on the Tuesday before the holidays.

In Language Arts, we are finishing off our non-fiction unit. We mailed out our friendly letters before the holidays and are eagerly awaiting responses in the new year! We will continue to learn how to write different types of letters. For reading, we are studying the main idea and supporting details of non-fiction texts.

Welcome back!

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a fun and relaxing holiday with family and friends. Another exciting month has begun! I want to take this opportunity to welcome students and parents to our new class website. This will replace Edmodo.  Here you will have the opportunity to:

  • Keep up to date with the learning going on in the classroom
  • Monitor weekly homework assignments
  • Use our classroom calendar to stay on top of due dates, PD days, special activities, pizza lunches, etc.
  • Use the curriculum links to practice, learn and have fun!

***Please note, this website does not replace the student agenda. It is merely for additional support. Students are required to and are responsible for writing down their daily tasks.

I am really looking forward to what is in store during the next few months! One of my goals for 2014 is to encourage your child to participate fully in school work and school activities/fun.
