White Elephant Sale

St. Emily will be having our annual White Elephant Sale on Thursday, December 14th.

We are asking the St. Emily School community to donate new or gently used, clean items prior to December 11th. This has been a great success over the years due to the excitement of the students as they found bargains to bring home.

On Thursday, December 14th, each class will have the opportunity to come to the gym and shop. Items will be marked in increments of 25 cents and most likely will be priced in the range of 25 cents to $3. This may be an opportunity for young students to do some Christmas shopping.

In the meantime, please look through ‘no longer needed items’ in your home and consider donating to our White Elephant Sale. We would also greatly appreciate donations of wrapping paper, tissue paper and gift bags. This is in keeping with our REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE environmentally friendly attitude. Remember that ‘one person’s junk is another person’s treasure’!

STEM bins

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These bins were designed to be flexible for a variety of times throughout the school day. They can be used as tasks for early finishers, centres, morning work, indoor recess, etc.

We have a designated spot in our classroom where we keep the bins. There have been many questions about them and the students are eager to begin using them next week. Each bin contains different materials inside to be used for creative exploration.

Instead of having extra “busy" work in the classroom, students will be engaged in creative, complex tasks and encouraged to think like inventors.

We welcome any donations of items throughout the year to place into our bins. I hope to mix them up and create new ones every few months. For some examples of items, please visit http://www.schoolingamonkey.com/supplies-for-science-experiments/

Long division

We will begin long division next week. Please encourage your children to review this challenging concept at home. The following video is a great help!

Scholastic Book Orders

Scholastic has recently added a shipping fee of $5.00 for any orders that fall below $25.00. For this reason, I will no longer be putting in multiple orders throughout the month, but one mass order at the end of each month. So just a heads up, if your son/daughter sends in money for an order, it may be a few weeks instead of a few days for books to come in from now on. Students will write the due date for each order form in their agendas. Thank you.
